I was selected as the UK artist to work alongside invited artists Martin Zet from the Czech Republic and Pawel Hajncel from Poland. Artist in residence at Merton Abbey Primary School

In partnership with Acava Studios and Arts Development Merton during February/March 2008.

I have recently had the wonderful opportunity to work as artist in residence with Year 2 pupils at Merton Abbey Primary School. Over a 5 week period, I undertook a drawing project with the children (aged 6-7). Using the local urban environment and Wandle Trail as inspiration, the children experimented with new drawing materials, including graphite sticks, charcoal, white pens, till rolls and recycled paper, and drew on location at Merton Abbey Mills. They made some fabulous individual and collaborative drawings from life and from memory (see Marco's gorgeous drawing of a pylon).

Filmmakers Sav Kyriacou and Lindsay Starbuck have filmed the process of the project with the children, and this has been made into a DVD. I have also been making my own till roll drawing of the 14 mile Wandle Trail as part of my residency.

This film will be shown at a sharing assembly at Merton Abbey Primary School on 6th June 2008 at 2pm. I will be facilitating a drawing installation with year 2 pupils and they will be showing a selection of their work from the project at Merton Abbey Mills on 7th June 2008, as part of the Wandle Valley Festival.

Holton Lee Residency

In May 2007 I was invited by Tony Heaton, Director, to work at Holton Lee as artist-in-residence, as part of Purbeck Arts Week, My brief was to make work for a solo exhibition at the gallery, combining local landscapes and work from my recent visits to Japan as inspiration for the show.

Holton Lee is situated in a secluded and varied landscape of heathland, woodland and reed beds. I spent the week dodging the torrential rain and making work from exploratory walks in this landscape and around the area of Poole Harbour. This included a series of panoramic drawings and paintings on canvas, in sketchbooks and on roller blinds.

Residency in Japan

In October/Novermber 2006 I undertook a residency in Japan, funded by the Gen Foundation. I worked in collaboration with the University of Art in Kyoto and delivered lectures and workshops for the students and made work inspired by the Zen gardens of Kyoto. On my return I have been developing a series of sketchbooks from Japan, and continue to be inspired by the materials and imagery I found over there. For examples of work click on Japan.
